“My own mother had an illegal abortion 50 years ago and almost died”

On the Place du Trocadéro in Paris, a hundred or so women wave hangers, in memory of the dark period of the angel makers. A few weeks later, the information according to which the American Supreme Court plans to reconsider the right to abortion still has the effect of a bomb.

Olivia, a Franco-American from Paris, decided to go out to demonstrate on Sunday: “My own mother had an illegal abortion in the 1950s in the United States. She described me and said it was horrible. She almost died and it remained for her like a trauma.“

That other Americans can experience the same ordeal as Olivia’s mother makes the many demonstrators shiver. Cindy, a New Yorker by origin, is afraid of this backtracking: “50 years ago, it was really bad and it will be like that again. It just means it will be more dangerous for women who need it.“, she protests.

“Abortions will not disappear because abortion will be illegal”

Christine would never have thought that the right to abortion would again be threatened in her country. According to her, if the US Supreme Court reverses this right, it will create new inequalities: “This will mostly affect poor women, black women“, she believes. Imagine, you have to have an abortion, but for that you have to cross a state as big as France to go to another state? It is not possible…“

For the demonstrators: if abortion is threatened in the United States, it is because of the influence of religion. On the Place du Trocadéro, a sign summarizes: “Keep your beads away from my ovaries“.
