La Prairie de Caen, a treasure of biodiversity before our eyes

Swallows, ducks, nutria, herons, frogs and even… a vulture! La Prairie de Caen, the city’s green lung, abounds in biodiversity that you may never have known about. A few years ago, Alexandre Levallois, a doctoral student in marine biology at the University of Caen, launched his popular science YouTube channel on the subject of animal life. His favorite playground, you will have understood, is therefore the Prairie.

“La Prairie hides its secrets. If you sit down for a few moments, you can see certain species that you don’t normally see in a city. It’s a chance for the people of Caen.”

Raise awareness, show, interest

The different species are not lacking in the heart of the Prairie. A diversity that Alexandre invites to safeguard and be more interested in through his videos: “For example, if you start wildlife photography, you say to yourself ‘yes, but I don’t have access to the mountains, I can’t go and photograph tigers.’ Of course, it’s quite complicated. You you can just start going to the Prairie and observe this fauna and you will see a lot of species. This is kind of the whole approach that I was trying to put forward via the videos that I make on the Internet.

“The more we know about species, the more we will be able to protect them.”

The goal is to make people curious and then maybe they’ll take an interest in the species and be able to do more things in their daily lives to protect them. . It is important in the context of global warming, ecological change and all the transition that we have to make in the coming years.”
