The fire, which ravaged the old Stock Exchange in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the morning of Tuesday April 16, is already affecting the residents. The building was under renovation for its 400th anniversary.

In the heart of Copenhagen (Denmark), Tuesday April 16, impressive flames and thick smoke. It was around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning when a fire broke out in the Danish capital’s historic Stock Exchange, one of the city’s oldest monuments. Around the building, the perimeter was quickly cordoned off, and dozens of soldiers and firefighters were deployed. “I can say that there are no injuries”assured Jakob Vedsted, local head of emergency management, while noting “very significant damage to the roof and interior” of the building.

A “national treasure” steeped in history

While firefighters tried to put out the fire, a few meters from the ladder, the imposing 54-meter spire collapsed in front of shocked and helpless Danes. An image that recalls the disappearance of the spire of Notre-Dame de Paris just five years ago. “It’s our Notre-Dame, it’s our national treasure. I was very moved this morning when I saw people running out of the building carrying paintings. There are a lot of old Danish paintings in the interior”, says a woman, still in shock. The building housed an extensive art collection, and was being renovated to celebrate its four centuries of existence.
