In Isère, a real estate project, led by former basketball star Tony Parker, is causing controversy. The latter wants to build a large hotel complex in Villard-de-Lans, a town of 4,000 inhabitants which, like many resorts, is increasingly lacking snow.
With the lack of snow, what future for skiing in Villard-de-Lans (Isère)? At the foot of the slopes, in place of a car park, a luxury residence with at least 500 beds and a sports complex could see the light of day, a project led by ex-basketball star Tony Parker. It divides the inhabitants. “This is not a viable project”estimates one of them, while another wonders about the consequences on “global warming”.
A 96 million euro project
The 96 million euro project also has fervent supporters, particularly among traders. “It could mean more people for us, for the other nearby villages”, comments one of them. Another project is planned for Corrençon-en-Vercors (Isère). It is also denounced by the local collective “Vercors Citoyen”, which is worried about the environmental consequences. “In terms of impact on water, natural resources, on the carbon footprint… They are still on the previous paradigm, the model of the 70s”, reacts one of the members, Jean-Yves Bodin.
The mayor of Villard-de-Lans wants to develop a new business clientele and tourism during the four seasons. The two real estate projects are currently suspended due to administrative appeals.
