A violation of the commitments made under the international agreement of 2015. Iran has significantly increased in recent months the amount of highly enriched uranium produced, according to a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published Wednesday November 17th. Tehran was supposed to drastically limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief from the international community.
According to agency estimates dating back to early November, Tehran has increased its stock of enriched uranium to 60%, well beyond the authorized limit of 3.67%, to 17.7 kg against 10 kg at the end of August, while the uranium enriched to 20% fell from 84.3 kg to 113.8 kg.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, is due to pay a visit to Tehran from November 22, a few days after complaining about the lack of contact with the Iranian government on the nuclear issue.
Rafael Grossi is expected Monday evening in Tehran at the invitation of Iran. He “will meet on Tuesday the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization (OIEA), Mohammad Eslami, and the head of Iranian diplomacy Hossein Amir-Abdollahian”, said the spokesperson of the OIEA, quoted by the Iranian news agency Fars.
After five months of suspension, negotiations between Tehran and the other countries still party to the 2015 agreement (Germany, China, France, United Kingdom, Russia) must resume on November 29 to try to relaunch this historic pact. The United States, which withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and subsequently reinstated sanctions against Iran, will participate indirectly in the discussions.
