For several weeks, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has inflamed American universities. Dozens of campuses are the scene of demonstrations in support of Gaza, often resulting in violence and hundreds of arrests.
Tents are pitched on the campuses of several American universities: Los Angeles, Austin, Boston, Washington. Students show support for Gaza residents and want their university to cut ties with Israel.
The movement started on April 17 from Columbia University, in New York (United States). After several unsuccessful negotiations with management, the students were ordered to leave their camp, but refused. Some demonstrators barricaded themselves in a university building. Dozens of people were arrested.
Clashes between demonstrators
On Wednesday May 1 in Los Angeles (United States), tension rose a notch with clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli activists. The clashes lasted several hours and people were injured. The police eventually destroyed the encampment and arrested students.
The situation is not new. In November 2023, on the campus of the University of Louisiana (United States), pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli students came to blows, shortly after the first bombings on Gaza.
