“in the red”, pig farmers in convoy to the Côtes-d’Armor prefecture

“Whatever the size and the breeding method, everyone is in the red!” Unable to live on their production, the pig farmers of Côtes-d’Armor organized a new punch action, converging by tractor towards the prefecture.

Leaving by tractor from Lamballe or Guingamp, the pig farmers converged on Thursday towards Saint-Brieuc, causing traffic jams on the National 12.

They say they are determined “to obtain concrete results during the ‘swine crisis unit’, organized in the prefecture.

“Whatever the size and the breeding method, everyone is in the red”, explain the FDSEA and the Young Farmers.

“Every week, an average family farm of 200 sows works to generate a loss equivalent to two monthly minimum wage. What citizen would accept that? It’s absolutely inconceivable. It’s a declaration of a state of emergency, it’s the hour of “whatever it takes” to save our breeders and their families”.

“The slaughterers and the distribution must record a price that covers our costs, and the State must assume its role for a real application of the rules of commercial negotiation allowing a fair remuneration of the producer.

This is not the first action organized since the beginning of the year by the producers. Already on January 8, Jérémy Labbé, president of the Young Farmers of the department expressed his concern on our website. Today, when we sell a pig, we are paid 125 euros. 125 euros is what he consumed in food. We no longer have enough to pay ourselves, no more to pay our bills, to repay our credits. An average farm loses 20,000 euros per month! And they still announce us a rise in the price of cereals!

In Sizun in Finistère, Thierry Marchal is one of these 4,000 Breton producers affected by the rise in raw materials. He asks the State to help agriculture as it has helped other sectors of activity to get through the health crisis.

“And the increase in costs affects all livestock sectors” also emphasize FDSEA and Young Farmers. The two unions are already promising other actions on Friday January 21 and Thursday January 27.
