Aircraft grounded. Traffic at Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest, was disrupted for two hours on Thursday, July 25, due to environmental activists invading the site. All takeoffs and landings were suspended. Traffic eventually resumed, but remains very disrupted, the airport said on the social network X, advising passengers to check the status of their flights.
The action was claimed by activists from the group Letzte Generation (Last Generation), which has carried out many spectacular actions in the name of climate protection. This time, the action is being carried out to claim “to the German government to participate in the development and signing of a legally binding international agreement that regulates the global phase-out of oil, gas and coal by 2030.”
“Six protesters used small pliers to make openings in the fences [de l’aéroport] and arrived on foot, by bike and by skateboard at different points around the runways and landing strips,” explains a statement from the group. This militant action is part of an international campaign led with other organizations, they say. On Wednesday, several environmental organizations had carried out actions against airports in Europe, including London’s Heathrow airport, the largest in Europe, and Cologne airport in Germany.
