With counterfeiters becoming more and more precise, counterfeits are invading the fashion market. Scams often foiled thanks to specialized companies.
Counterfeits are penetrating the fashion market in an increasingly imperceptible manner. Many scams have been spotted on the luxury second-hand market. Beverly Sonego, CEO of the luxury goods consignment store Monogram Paris, must discern the real from the fake. She learned to recognize the small details that differentiate an original piece from a counterfeit. But sometimes, thanks to the increasingly meticulous work of counterfeiters, it remains difficult to ensure the authenticity of certain models, explains the young CEO. “I needed to call on external experts who came to give me their opinion so that I could put the bag, or not, on sale“, she confides.
Avoiding Internet scams
Most counterfeits today are sold on the Internet. The Ebrand France company works for 500 luxury brands. Its role: remove all suspicious ads from the Internet. “We don’t even need to look if the bag is fake, we know the ad is fakeexplains Pierre Berecz, president of the company. And at that point we delete the ad.“Last year, Ebrand removed more than a million ads,” assures the president.
