A newcomer to the highest level of the rugby planet. Chile acquired its very first qualification for a World Cup by beating the United States (31-29), in Colorado, on Saturday July 16, in the play-offs. The feat is significant for the Chileans, beaten in the first leg (21-22) and who were behind by nineteen points after thirty minutes. With courage, they snatched victory on a penalty in the 75th minute, recording their presence at the World Cup in France in the fall of 2023 for a small point.

24th nation in the World Rugby rankings, Chile becomes the third South American team to qualify, after Argentina and Uruguay. The Chileans will find the Pumas in Pool D of the World Cup (match in Nantes on September 30). They will also face Japan (September 10 in Toulouse), Samoa (September 16 in Bordeaux) and England (September 23 in Lille).
All is not lost for the United States, which have qualified for eight of the nine finals since the inception of the World Cup in 1987. They will have to win a mini repechage tournament pitting them against Kenya, Portugal and the loser of a play-off match between Tonga and Hong Kong.
