Dog meat, we hadn’t seen it pass! The heritage house in which the author ofA man and his sin and its adaptation The Beautiful Stories of the Pays d’en Hautlocated in Sainte-Adèle, was put on the market earlier this year.

Dating from 1851, the house has changed hands over time, first belonging to a blacksmith who had set up his activities there until 1920, then passed on to veterinarian Jean-Marie Grignon, before making his way to to the renowned writer and native of Sainte-Adèle, according to data recorded by the Patrimoine-Laurentides site. It is now found listed in the directory of the Cultural Heritage of Quebec, which recognizes its heritage interest. “The house retains some elements of English colonial and neoclassical architecture,” it says. It is also indicated that it is “one of the only vestiges of the Adele past”.
Contradictory information circulates as to the takeover of the premises by the author, but a commemorative plaque installed on its walls indicates that he lived there from 1930 until his death in 1976. For the record, A man and his sin was published in 1933.
A man and his broker
This rather special house was put back on the market about 5 months ago. The price, which has since been adjusted, is currently set at $525,000.
The interior has something to arouse curiosity, with its airs of yesteryear, in particular the varnished wooden work room, where Claude-Henri Grignon worked. “It is steeped in history, the office and the library where the books were written have remained as they are,” said Stéfany Lavigne, broker in charge of the file.
Visits have taken place this week, but no offer has yet been submitted. “Houses over a hundred years old need love year after year, it doesn’t reach everyone, it’s a question of timing”, she specifies.
On the renovation side, the roof has just been freshly painted, but the kitchen needs to be redone, and some windows will need to be changed. Exterior modifications and volume changes will not be permitted, but interior work may be carried out, indicates the broker. In addition to the heritage interest of the building, Ms.me Lavigne points out as assets the location of the property, near the village and Lac Rond.
