Guillaume Canet “joyed and proud to be president of the Deauville American Film Festival in September”

In addition to the six films in which he is expected in the next six months, actor-director and producer Guillaume Canet will be the president of the next American Film Festival in Deauville, which takes place from September 1 to 10. The author of small handkerchiefs, that we will soon see in Louis XVI in The flood, will preside over a jury waiting to be named. He succeeds Arnaud Desplechin who had been president of the jury in September 2022.

“Guillaume Canet will be the president of the Deauville 2023 jury. Actor in more than 50 films, director, author of eight feature films, producer, screenwriter… A president of the jury as unifying as he is open-minded for this 49th edition!”festival organizers wrote on Twitter.

“This cinema with which I grew up”

Guillaume Canet responded enthusiastically to his appointment in a letter:

“I have always been fascinated and passionate about independent American cinema. And especially that of the 70s. Sam Peckinpah, Jerry Schatzberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese… These directors were often able to express themselves freely without the commercial pressures of major Hollywood studios, exploring new narrative forms, experimenting with new techniques and shaking up traditional conventions.

This cinema with which I grew up gave birth to many talented filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Wes Anderson… And many others, who brought their unique vision to the American cinematographic landscape, a refreshing alternative to production mainstream.
And it is above all this creativity, this audacity and this diversity that I appreciate so much in independent cinema. This contribution to enrich and broaden our experience of cinema.

The Deauville festival has become the unmissable event for American cinema in Europe and it is with immense joy and pride that I accepted to chair the jury for this 2023 edition. Thanks to Bruno Barde for this invitation and to very quickly on the shores of the flowery coast!”
