Montreal | Downtown business ravaged by arson

(Montreal) A licensed establishment in downtown Montreal was heavily damaged by an arson attack that was started early Tuesday night.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) reported no injuries a few hours later, but no one could be arrested.

The authorities were alerted around 1 a.m. when a telephone call was made to the 911 emergency center for a fire in the building located on rue de la Cathédrale near the intersection of rue Saint-Antoine West.

Police have been informed that a person was seen throwing a Molotov cocktail into the establishment in order to set it on fire. This person then fled on foot, to an unknown destination.

Firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) intervened to limit the damage caused by the fire.

The building is located at a busy crossroads. It includes Place du Canada, a Citizenship and Immigration Canada building and a bus terminal.

At the end of the night, a security perimeter prevented all car traffic on a section of rue de la Cathédrale, south of rue Saint-Antoine Ouest.

The investigation is led by the SPVM arson squad.
