Mary Simon said in a statement on Twitter that she tested positive Wednesday morning and was experiencing “mild symptoms” of COVID-19.

Mme Simon writes that she will continue to self-isolate and rest for the next few days.

His positive test follows that of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who recently returned to Parliament after being declared positive on January 31.

Mme Simon, 74, is the first Indigenous person to be appointed Governor General of Canada. She was sworn in to this position last July.

In her statement, she says she and her husband, Whit Fraser, are seeing firsthand that “this pandemic is not over yet,” but that the progress being made “is significant.”

“We are both grateful to all the people who play an important role in the fight against this virus, she writes. From healthcare workers to caregivers and so many more, thank you for all you do. »
