Gabriel Attal will chair the national tribute in Caen (Calvados) on Wednesday to the two prison officers killed in the attack on their van in Incarville (Eure), on May 14, announced Tuesday, May 21, government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot following the Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister will replace the Head of State Emmanuel Macron, who was to chair the ceremony but changed his schedule to travel to New Caledonia from Tuesday evening.
The ceremony will take place on Wednesday at noon at the former Caen remand prison (Calvados), a week after the death of prison captain Fabrice Moello and brigadier supervisor Arnaud Garcia. The two prison officers were killed during an ambush, which also left three people injured and allowed the escape of Mohamed Amra, a multi-recidivist inmate.
After Tuesday’s events, prison officers began blocking the prisons. Almost everywhere in France, this movement led to disruptions in the functioning of justice for three days, including the postponement or interruption of trials, when the defendants or accused could not be taken from their cells to appear. To respond, the Ministry of Justice made proposals on Friday evening to strengthen the security of agents.
