Senators win 3-2 over Rangers
Brady Tkachuk set up the first goal for his team, scored the tying goal late in the third period and gave the Senators the victory Friday night in overtime.
The Ottawa team beat the New York Rangers 3-2 and got revenge for their loss on Wednesday.
It was the second duel in three days for the two clubs. Rangers won the first clash 3-1.
This time around, Tkachuk, who scored a Gordie Howe-style hat trick, was all the rage for the Senators. He set up Tim Stützle’s goal before hitting the target himself twice.
He slid the puck under Igor Shesterkin on a fumble with 18 seconds left in overtime and the Senators, who had not led the game, came away with the two points. Cam Talbot made 25 saves in the win.
“It will definitely be memorable,” admitted Tkachuk, who was competing in a 300e NHL game. “Everyone was up to it tonight. It was a meaningful match for us, a crucial match for our confidence. Hopefully now we will embark on a small winning streak. »
Cam Talbot made 25 saves in the win, while Thomas Chabot had two assists.
Vitali Kravtsov and Mika Zibanejad provided the response for Rangers. Shesterkin stopped 34 shots in the loss.
“I don’t think we played well enough in the first or second (period), admitted Zibanejad. We played a little better in the third but it’s definitely disappointing to play like that, especially with Shesty giving us a chance to win. »
A topsy-turvy game
The Rangers were the first in the scoring and they did it halfway through the first period. Kravtsov tried to direct a shot towards the net, but it hit defender Travis Hamonis near the face. The Russian winger took a comeback of his own and surprised Talbot.
Defender Libor Hajek made sure to preserve the Rangers lead before retreating to the locker room. At the end of the first period, he stopped a shot on the goal line that was heading for the back of the net.
The Senators needed to put the puck twice in the net to tie the game.
After a Claude Giroux goal was disallowed due to offside seen through video replay, Stützle brought both teams back to square one minutes later in the second half. On a power play, he pounced on a loose puck in the crease after a scramble in front of the net and beat Shesterkin with a backhand shot. Tkachuk was complicit in the goal.
At the end of the middle period, the captains of the two teams, Jacob Trouba, of the Rangers, and Tkachuk, of the Senators, fought each other. Another fight ensued between Austin Watson and Barclay Goodrow.
With nearly a minute to go in the second half, Samuel Blais had a chance to put Rangers back in front, but his shot hit the post.
Rangers regained their one-goal lead thanks to a similar scenario to their first goal of the game. After a shot hit defender Artem Zub in the face and he crashed onto the ice, Zibanejad took advantage of the space — and time — available to score.
Despite Shesterkin’s brilliance late in the third period, Tkachuk completed his Gordie Howe hat trick with 49 seconds left in the final period when he redirected a Chabot shot behind the New York keeper. This net forced overtime.
If Zibanejad wasn’t able to capitalize on his overtime fumble, Tkachuk didn’t let such an opportunity slip away. He slipped the puck under Shesterkin to give the victory to his team.
