Francos de Montréal: Diane Tell, rare elegance

On the Loto-Québec stage at the Francos de Montréal, Diane Tell was able to fully celebrate her 45th birthday with the Montreal public, which was unfortunately sparse on Friday evening due to capricious weather.

But the absent are always wrong, it is well known.

A very jazzy atmosphere accompanied the arrival of Diane Tell on stage, when she immediately intoned “Les cinémas-bars”. She then invited us on a real stroll through her repertoire of yesterday and today.

Several of his old hits warmed up the audience to start the evening, such as “Often a long time enormously” and “Gilberto”.

It is necessary to underline the interesting contribution of Julien Fillion on the saxophone, but also on the guitar and the bass, which is a major asset in the group.

Explaining that Fred Fortin had produced his last album, “Haïku”, released in 2019, eight years after the previous one, she said she was surprised when she heard “Vie”, the first song he sent her, and which strangely resembled to… from the Diane Tell. “Spoiler” goes a bit elsewhere, but remains in the color palette it has accustomed us to. We were also able to discover songs in more unusual styles for the singer like “Evolène” or the amazing “Chat”.

“Getting to Know Again” then rang out with different arrangements from the 80s original.

Serge Farley Fortin (whom Diane Tell’s father gave birth to, she said), discreetly arrived on stage to sing a duet “Moi Fille Toi Garçon”. He then performed a song of his own, with a country flavor, “Quand ça fait 3…4…”

With her five musicians, reinforced by two choristers, Diane Tell is not content to line up her great successes which will appeal nostalgically to the spectators, she will seek out recent little treasures or on old forgotten albums which allow us to rediscover her talent for writing and his unique voice.

We were able to hear again the very beautiful “On a beau”, which appeared on the album “Chimères”, in 1982, the surprising “Questionnaire” from 2019, without forgetting the inevitable “If I were a man”, as well as “The Legend of Jimmy”, completely transformed.

In closing, while the rain redoubled its ardor and scared many people away, she chained “I am in love” and “Miami”, like a call for the return of the sun.
