The tone is rising between France and the United Kingdom concerning fishing licenses, as the first sanctions fall against British boats in French waters. A conflictual situation between two partner countries which could intensify.

According to the French authorities, the boat was fishing in French waters without a valid license. It is one of the retaliatory measures applied by the French government to face the British decision not to award all fishing licenses to French boats. “The British must respect their commitments”, reminded Jeans Castex, Prime Minister, Thursday, October 28.

The sanctions could increase in a few days. Tuesday, October 2, English boats could be banned from unloading fish in French ports, while increasing customs and health controls. Measures qualified as “disappointing and disproportionate” by George Eustace, UK Minister for the Environment. In favor of Brexit, British fishermen hope their government will not give in. “He must hold on, these are our waters!exclaims Peter Coglin, fisherman in Hastings. Across the Channel, possible sanctions against the French would be considered.
