The father of the girl from Granby received a four-year prison sentence for his role in the death of his own daughter, but was severely blamed by the judge for his “unspeakable cowardice”.
“You behaved like a coward. Your behavior disgusts me, as they disgusted the whole province of Quebec […] I have no form of sympathy for you, ”dropped Judge François Huot, endorsing the joint suggestion presented by the Crown and the defense.
The father did not want to go to court before receiving his sentence. Six months of preventive detention were removed from his sentence, bringing the whole to three and a half years behind bars.
“The concept of justice requires, reflection, hindsight, detachment with the emotional and impartiality. […] This was a fair and reasonable solution, added the magistrate, speaking of several factors to be considered and stressing the quality of the work of the lawyers on the file.
“How could you have tied your child up like that? You behaved towards this little girl like you don’t even behave with an animal. “
If one day he will be done with justice, Judge Huot reminded him that his real sorrow that he will always be followed until the end of his days by the image of his daughter.
For her part, the stepmother of the 38-year-old will have to serve 13 years behind bars before being eligible for parole, she who had been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of unpremeditated murder .
Touching testimonies
Today, at the Trois-Rivières courthouse, several relatives of the child came to talk about the heavy impact of the crime on their lives, as part of the representations on the father’s sentence.
“I don’t know if one day [nom du père], I can forgive you for turning a blind eye to all this. Me tears come to my eyes just thinking about that. It is an unforgettable horror. […] Think to [ta fille] behind your little bars, ”wrote the grandmother of the accused, in an emotional letter read in court.
“You have children to take care of it”
The victim’s mother gave a heart-rending cry before Judge Huot, lamenting that she had never been taken seriously by the authorities when she cared about her child’s well-being.
“I fought, and nobody ever listened to me,” she thundered. We were a clique that wanted my daughter’s best. “
She vigorously blamed her ex-partner for his inaction and for the abuse suffered by the girl.
“You have children to take care of it. […] Why take him away from people who loved him ?, she asked him. If you were really going to get help, our daughter would still be here, not in a coffin. “
Judge François Huot wished her to find peace, despite the tragedy she experienced.
