Mason Greenwood, Manchester United football club striker, was charged on Saturday (October 15th) with attempted rape and intentional assault, the British prosecutor’s office announced. The magistrates clarified that these counts relate to one and the same victim and that the 21-year-old player will appear for the first time in court on Monday.

Mason Greenwood, one of English football’s greatest hopefuls, was arrested at the end of January after photos and videos were posted on social media showing a young woman with a bloody face and bruises on her body, with the mention “to anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood is really doing to me”.

First placed in police custody, accused of rape and assault, he was released under judicial supervision in early February, then immediately suspended by his club. He has not played an official match since.

On Saturday morning he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police for breaching his judicial review, prompting these new charges and his arraignment in court on Monday. “Greater Manchester Police are aware of charges relating to a 21-year-old who allegedly breached the terms of his judicial review and an arrest has been made on October 15”said a police spokesman on Saturday morning, who cannot name the defendant for legal reasons.
