Expedia plans to cut 1,500 jobs worldwide in 2024

(New York) The travel reservation site Expedia plans to eliminate around 1,500 positions worldwide in 2024 as part of a restructuring of its organization and its technological evolution, it announced Monday.

“As we complete many major technical milestones in Expedia Group’s transformation, the company continues to evaluate the appropriate allocation of its resources to ensure that the most important activities continue to take priority” , explained an Expedia spokesperson.

As a result, the American group has decided to scrutinize its operations, which should “ultimately affect around 1,500 positions worldwide”, he continued.

This “will allow the group to invest in strategic growth sectors,” assured this spokesperson.

According to its latest annual report, Expedia employed 16,500 people as of December 31, 2022 in fifty countries.

In a declaration made Monday to the American Stock Exchange Police (SEC), the group specifies that the cost of this personnel reduction should be between 80 and 100 million dollars before taxes.

This will mainly involve severance pay and compensation for social benefits, indicates the group, specifying that some of the employees concerned had started to be informed on Monday.

The group announced on February 8 an unexpected change of boss effective May 13. Peter Kern, boss since 2020, will nevertheless remain in the group as vice-president of the board of directors after Ariane Gorin takes office.

In electronic trading after the close of the New York Stock Exchange, Expedia shares were stable (+0.04%).
