Emmanuel Macron came first in the first round of the presidential election, with 27.6% of the vote, Sunday April 10, according to an Ipsos-Sopra Steria estimate for France Télévisions, Radio France, France24/RFI/MCD, Public Sénat/LCP Assemblée Nationale and Le Parisien-Today in France. The President of the Republic, candidate for re-election, will now have to bring together his political family and beyond to counter his opponent, Marine Le Pen, also qualified for the second round, with 23% of the vote.

“Make no mistake, nothing is settled”reacted Emmanuel Macron on Sunday evening, from the Exhibition of the door of Versailles, in Paris, where the militants of La République en Marche were gathered for the election night. The outgoing president called for the founding, beyond the “differences”, “a great political movement of unity and action”.

“I would like to reach out to all those who want to work for France, to invent something new, in order to build with them a common action to build our nation in the years to come.”

The momentum in favor of Emmanuel Macron had however stalled in the final stretch of the campaign. While the latter benefited from the “flag effect” at the start of the war in Ukraine, with very favorable polls, the mechanics seized up in the last few days. Accused by his adversaries of running a minimal campaign and refusing any debate before the first round, the outgoing president was forced to speed up late.

He thus made his first trips to the field in the last ten days and held a single meeting at La Défense Arena, in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), on April 2. The candidate Macron also tried on this occasion to raise the bar on the left, by emphasizing the most social measures of his program. A nod to the electorate on the left, essential to counter Marine Le Pen in the second round.
