The price of stere has soared by 20% in 2024. However, it remains more economical than fuel oil or gas, and delivery times are lengthening. Report in Ille-et-Vilaine.

Daniel has been delivering his wood to the Rennes region for 30 years. This year, demand has increased, and he cannot respond to all calls. His first customer of the day, Francis Faisnel, ordered five steres, or around 2 tonnes of wood. The price of wood has also increased, by 20% in 2023. At the end of the chain, it is the customer who is affected. “The producer (…), he has to cut, he has to work. Costs are increasing…“, however, observes Francis.

Rising demand and rise in the price of fuel oil

How to explain the increase? First, the demand for wood, known to be more economical than electricity. Francis says he saved “[entre] 200 and 300 euros” per year. For Daniel, the key factor is the price of diesel. “I filled up with 1,000 liters of fuel oil, for around 800 euros before the crisis. Today I managed to pay 1,700, see 1,800, 1,900 euros for 1000 liters“, he says. To lower the bill, his supplier chose to partly cut down the trees in the region. Breton wood is, however, rarer and more expensive.
