[Critique] “Tango suite”, Denis Plante and Stéphane Tétreault

Why not end this year more bitter than sweet with a CD that goes off the beaten track and conveys here and there, through its nostalgic melancholy, the hints of “Why all this? hovering over 2022. Here is Denis Plante enriching the bandoneon repertoire with Six Suites two to four movements. Six, like those of Bach, in dialogue with the cello of Stéphane Tétreault. We would like to say: “You are going to dance! ” But no. You will think of badly lit alleys, crumbling walls, certain sets of Jules Maigret’s Paris when he was played by Jean Gabin. The following Argentina is dominated by this oppression, whereas the “Canto” of the 2nd Suite is a sublime sketch. The 4e and some passages from the 6e clash, like parentheses. But, like “Apache”, which concludes the 3e, this project is quite remarkable: all these compositions are new, whereas we have the impression that they have always been there, that they are natural to us. It’s sadly bright. Poignant, even.
