The island of Mayotte is facing a cholera epidemic, which has already caused the death of a three-year-old girl. To contain the spread of the disease, health brigades alert the population.

In Koungou (Mayotte), health brigades are responsible for alerting the population to the dangers of cholera. In the district where the epidemic was detected, vaccination has started. Doctors, nurses and reservists, often from France, practice it. Friday May 10, 3,700 people have already been vaccinated in a few hours. “When we have someone who is sick, we arrange to go to their home and we will treat their entire family to protect them. We also disinfect the home“, explains Olivia Noël, reservist supporting the crisis unit.

A three-year-old girl has died

The first victim of this epidemic, a three-year-old girl, lived in a shantytown in the north of the archipelago. This place, unsanitary and without running water, is conducive to the spread of cholera. 65 cases have officially been recorded since Wednesday. The Minister for Health, Frédéric Valletoux, arrived on site and called for “do not worry“.
