Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) is one of the composers whose recent rediscovery, thanks to the CPO label, turned out to be the most significant. Her time was when it was not allowed for a woman to compose. Despite the favorable reception of musicians and the public during self-financed concerts, none of the major publishers in Berlin or Leipzig agreed to publish her works, automatically condemning her to marginality and oblivion. CPO had edited the Symphonies nbone 1 and 2, which evoked much Schubert. We are in the presence of a Germanic counterpart of Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) without anything from the latter’s career. Of the two present symphonies, the inspiration at work in the 3e“Military” (1850), supplants that of the 6e of 1853, which is marked by a funeral march. In this CD, discovery takes precedence over musical hedonism, because the crude Bremerhaven orchestra will be supplanted at the first opportunity. But it must be remembered that the 3e Symphony by Emilie Mayer deserves an entry in the repertoire.
