[Critique] “Across the Room”, Gabrielle Shonk

The singer-songwriter will have taken the time it takes to release her second album, five years later Gabrielle Shonk. Across the Room is thus a highly emotive ensemble, in which Gabrielle Shonk delivers herself through sober and comfortable prose and bittersweet — but not solicitous — pop sounds, a bit nostalgic for the 2000s, co-composed by Jessy Caron of Men I Trust and produced by Jesse MacCormack. If the first songs ofAcross the Room sometimes struggle to distinguish themselves, we fully feel, in its second half, the color and the personality of this disc. Two titles are particularly noteworthy: People Pleaser And When calm returns. The first seduces indeed by its sincerity in the words and the melody, the raw and striking voice of Gabrielle Shonk being enhanced by a catchy rhythm. As for the second, let’s highlight the fragility and poetry of the musician revealed by lyrics in French and very tactile guitars.
