Charles III, who will be crowned on May 6, officially enters history. But not easy to pass after more than 70 years of reign of his mother, Elizabeth II. His popularity is struggling to take off, and during his outings, the future king is often booed.
Adored by some, welcomed with open arms. Booed by others, who don’t hesitate to throw eggs at him. The crown has never been so close for Charles III, but after 70 years spent in the shadow of a mother loved by all, the hearts of the British seem far from won. In the streets of London (United Kingdom), opinions remain measured. “It has nothing to do. Charles has our respect, but he will never have the love we had for the Queen. She had earned it after so many years“, says a Briton. “For people in their twenties like me, there’s not much to say about him”said a young woman.
Very clear-cut positions
For now, the popularity of Charles III is far from that of Elizabeth II. 55% of the opinion is favorable for the new king, against 80% for the late queen, even today. Since his accession to the throne, dissonant voices have been heard. Charles III is heckled at each of his outings, since his first days as sovereign, always with this rallying cry: “Not my king” (“Not my king”). Far from his mother’s imperturbable reserve, Charles took advantage of her relative freedom of expression throughout his life, not hesitating to multiply very clear-cut positions, particularly on the environment.
