The Liot group MP for the 5th constituency of Marne, Charles de Courson, announced to France Bleu Champagne-Ardenne on Monday 15 July that he was officially a candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly. The Marnais is the longest-serving MP in the National Assembly, where he has been elected since 1993. He began his eighth term on 8 July, after the second round of early legislative elections.

Charles de Courson gained media exposure in 2023, during the battle against pension reform. He had carried the cross-party motion of censure against this controversial text, which had nearly brought down the government.

The election of the president of the National Assembly will be held on Thursday, July 18, and other potential candidates have until the day before to apply. The outgoing president of the chamber, Yaël Braun-Pivet (Renaissance), has already announced that she wants to renew her mandate.
