Carlos Sainz dances in the rain. Two weeks after touching it in Montreal, the Ferrari driver clinched the first pole position of his career on Saturday July 2 at the Silverstone circuit, and will start at the top of the British Grand Prix, Sunday (4 p.m.). In difficult conditions, on a wet track, the Spaniard was the most solid and took advantage of a completely crazy end to the session to set the best time. He is ahead of championship leader Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc on the grid.

The Silverstone public however believed that Max Verstappen would grab his third pole of the season. The Dutchman has long lined up the best sectors and the best times in Q3, but he made a small mistake on his last attempt. Carlos Sainz, rather discreet since the start of the weekend, took the opportunity to set a benchmark time (1’40”984). He becomes the 104th poleman in Formula 1 history.
Nicholas Latifi signs the other fine performance of the day. By doing his laps as early as possible, when the track was drier, the Williams driver managed to reach Q3 for the first time in his career. The Canadian will start 10th, his best position on a starting grid.
However, qualifying was disappointing for Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) and Esteban Ocon (Alpine). Trapped by the rain, the two French drivers were unable to improve their times in Q2, and will start 11th and 15th respectively on the grid.
