Canadian skater of Danish origin Nikolaj Sorensen has been suspended for at least six years for “sexual abuse”.
This was announced by the Office of the Sports Integrity Commissioner (BCIS) on its website on Wednesday, specifying that the sanction is “likely to be the subject of a challenge or a call “.
Last January, Nikolaj Sorensen, who is under investigation following allegations of sexual assault, and his partner Laurence Fournier Beaudry withdrew from the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Calgary.
Daily life USA Today had reported the previous week that the BCIS was investigating Sorensen following sexual assault allegations made by a U.S. figure skating coach and former skater from Hartford, Conn., in 2012.
These allegations have never been proven in court.
Nikolaj Sorensen has already denied these allegations in a message posted on Instagram, but indicated that he and Laurence Fournier Beaudry had withdrawn from the Canadian Championships because they consider their participation would be a distraction.
Sorensen and Beaudry, who train in Montreal, finished in ninth place at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal last March, the same result as at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
