A judicial investigation, in particular for attempted assassination, was opened on Wednesday after the car-ram attack which occurred in early July at the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses (Val-de-Marne), announced on Sunday July 23, the Créteil prosecutor’s office to AFP. The counts of destruction of the property of others by a means dangerous for people in an organized gang and of participation in a criminal association with a view to the preparation of a crime were also retained. The case will be investigated by two magistrates, added the prosecution.

A burning vehicle was rushed to the pavilion of mayor Vincent Jeanbrun (LR) on the night of July 1 to 2, when urban violence took place throughout France following the death of Nahel, killed by a police officer on June 27 during a road check in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine). Present in the house, the wife of the elected official, the departmental councilor Mélanie Nowak, was injured while fleeing with her two young children. She had to be hospitalized. A march in support of the mayor and his family, bringing together elected officials and residents, took place on July 3, in this city of just over 30,000 inhabitants south of Paris and in front of many town halls.

An investigation had been opened by the prosecution and entrusted to the judicial police, first for attempted murder before being extended to the heads of criminal associations with a view to committing a crime and destruction of property by fire in an organized gang. It is in this context that twelve people were arrested on July 12 and placed in police custody. Then these people were all released the next day, without prosecution at this stage.
