Anti-Semitic demonstrations banned near buildings of Montreal’s Jewish community

The Superior Court prohibits pro-Palestine groups from demonstrating near Jewish community buildings in Montreal.

This follows a demonstration on Monday that turned into a blockade around a Jewish community center.

In a provisional injunction dated Tuesday, March 5, Judge Serge Gaudet prohibits Montréal4Palestine, Palestinian Youth Movement Montréal, Alliance4Palestine. Qc, Independent Jewish Voices, as well as Bara Iyad Abuhamed to take part in demonstrations within 50 meters of six establishments of the Jewish community, for a period of 10 days.

The buildings protected by the injunction are that of Federation CJA, the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue, the Cummings Center, the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA, the Herzliah school as well as United Talmud Torahs of Montreal.

On Wednesday, during an interview with The Canadian Press, the Advisory Center for Jewish and Israeli Relations denounced an “escalation” of anti-Semitism in Quebec following several violent events.

The organization called on parliamentarians and municipal elected officials to condemn with a strong message the increase in attacks targeting Jews in Quebec since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

The spokesperson for the Advisory Center, Eta Yudin, deplored the blockade organized by demonstrators on Monday around a Jewish community center in Montreal where an activity was taking place.

“It’s quite worrying, it’s become a rabid crowd,” described the vice-president of the Advisory Center for Quebec.

Protesters surrounded the building shouting and chanting hateful slogans, “which threatened the Jewish community and called for violence and intifada,” she reported. Members of the Jewish community were intimidated and attacked, Ms. Yudin continued.

Images of the demonstration circulated on social networks. The City of Montreal Police Department was able to organize an evacuation corridor after 3 and a half hours of blockade.

“It was a fairly disturbing evening, it takes a fairly strong condemnation of this hateful crowd, which essentially attacked the building of the Jewish community, and it takes more than words,” demanded Ms. Yudin, launching an appeal to elected representatives of parliaments, but also of municipal councils, as well as to the entire population.

“This is a key moment where we are witnessing an escalation in this type of event. »

Likewise, on Tuesday evening, demonstrators went to question Jews near a synagogue and the police intervened.

No less than 148 hate incidents targeting Jews have been reported to the Advisory Center for Jewish and Israeli Relations since October 7.

“This is not the Quebec we know, this must alarm the world,” she summarized.

“The Jewish community is being targeted for what is happening in a distant country: that is anti-Semitism. »
