More than six weeks after publicly announcing her departure while remaining discreetly at the helm of the Green Party of Canada, Annamie Paul announced again on Wednesday that she was resigning her position as leader, in addition to slamming the party’s door.

Even if she had already announced on September 27 that she would leave her place as leader, during a press conference where she did not answer any questions, the green candidate for the 2021 elections is, in fact, remained in job. So much so that his party has started an automatic review of its leadership, as required by its constitution in the event of electoral defeat.
The result of the vote by the members was to be known at the end of November. Annamie Paul needed 60% support to stay. According to her short statement on Twitter, she has instead decided to quit not only her post, but her party as well.
“I will also be terminating my SSC membership. It was an honor to work for the people of Canada, and I look forward to serving in a new way, ”continues Annamie Paul’s message.
The party spokesman explained in October that Mr.me Paul was to remain chief “until his resignation was concluded.” The entourage of the head had mentioned on September 27 a transition period of two weeks, period which turned into “a few weeks” the next day.
“I would like to see the date that this resignation will take effect. The first time she had resigned, I thought it was to take effect quickly ”, told the To have to Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec.
According to him, the postponement of Mr.me Paul had a disastrous effect on the Green Party. “During this period, the party was unable to comment on the news. He is however optimistic for the future, arguing that the Bloc Québécois was able to get back on its feet after the heartbreak it experienced when Martine Ouellet was the leader.
“For the leadership review vote, a firm was hired. It cost us money, which could have been avoided, ”notes Daniel Green, former deputy leader of the Green Party.
“I would have wished in the interest of all that she left more quickly, and now we will be able to turn the page of this chapter of the history of the party”, indicated the president of the Quebec wing of the Green Party of the Canada, Luc Joli-Cœur, in a statement.
Compensation
Annamie Paul and her party have been clashing in court since July over the validity of an arbitration that prevented the Greens from dismissing their internally challenged leader, in particular by the Quebec wing of the party. The question of compensation for legal fees paid by Mr.me Paul in this matter was a central part of the discussions about his departure.
It was not clear on Wednesday whether an agreement had reached Mr.me Paul and the Green Party. Party communications chief John Chenery was unable to say whether the court process in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice was still running its course, or why Annamie Paul had once again announced her resignation. At the time of writing, the official departure date of Mr.me Paul could not be confirmed.
The leader of the Greens spent most of the last election campaign combing her own riding of Toronto Center, where she finished in fourth place. Nationally, the Green Party of Canada was sixth in the number of votes cast, with 2.3% of the vote, behind Maxime Bernier’s Popular Party.
