Swiss artist Nemo won the Eurovision contest on Saturday May 11. James Leperlier, president of Inter-LGBT, guest of 19/20 info, welcomes this victory.

The Eurovision 2024 final, Saturday May 11, dedicated Switzerland and its artist Nemo. His song, “The Code”, recounts his realization of his non-binary identity. “I think it’s important for Nemo himself and for non-binary people to have visibility and to have representation everywhere, especially in such a well-known music competition”explained James Leperlier, president of Inter-LGBT. “To say that it is a victory for the entire LGBT movement in this current context of decline in LGBT rights throughout Europe, I would still prefer to be a little more mixed”he however tempered.

About 10% LGBT people

“The idea behind all this is to say that non-binarity is when we refuse to put ourselves in a box of a usual binary gender, man or woman”explained James Leperlier. According to him, there are as many non-binaries as there are individuals. “We know that there are around 10% LGBT people, but the term LBGT can mean many other identities”he concluded.
