A thick smog suffocates southern Quebec. Smoke from wildfires is degrading air quality to the point where Montreal held the unenviable title of the world’s most polluted air city on Sunday.
Toxic fumes fill the air throughout the Laurentian Valley from forest fires. From Gatineau to Rimouski via Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, the air quality is considered “poor” by the government.
Worse, Montreal ranked the city with the worst air quality on the planet, according to a compilation by IQAir, a Swiss company that monitors air pollution on the ground.
The pollution index reached 238, while the world’s second most polluted city, Kuwait City, Kuwait had an index of 160.
The Quebec data indicates that the air is even worse in the north and especially in the east of Montreal.
According to the Quebec government, the general population should not feel any significant effects on their health. On the other hand, the most vulnerable people, such as young children, the elderly and people with respiratory or heart problems, could be affected. For this reason, it is recommended that they reduce their physical activities outside.
Air pollution levels are expected to remain high on Monday.
