Good vintage for 2021. It must be said that the 2020 vintage had been largely hit by the pandemic with the closure of bars and restaurants. There were also the taxes imposed by Donald Trump on American imports. All of this is a matter of remembrance and this new breath is welcome. Spain benefits the most, followed by Italian and French wines and champagnes. The total value of exports reached 34 billion euros, up 16% compared to 2020 according to figures from the OIV, the international organization of vine and wine.

The interprofessional organization remains cautious about its outlook for this year. The pandemic is not over and is even reborn in some client countries such as China, inflation is weighing on consumers’ purchasing power everywhere. Russia’s war in Ukraine is driving up world prices and disrupting supply chains.

France in the top three

The sector is particularly concerned about the risk of interruption in the supply of inputs, the elements that go into the production of a good, in this case glass bottles, cardboard packaging, wooden crates and semiconductors to operate the machinery. The automotive sector is not the only one affected by the lack of electronic chips.

The 2021 vintage has been disastrous for many producers. For example, French production fell by 20% last year due to April frosts, summer rains and bouts of mildew, the disease that affected the vineyards. In order, Italy, France and Spain retain their place in the top three. The three now total 47% of world wine production.
