Jalalabad | At least three people were killed and fifteen injured by an explosion in a mosque during Friday prayers in Nangarhar province, eastern Afghanistan, a local hospital doctor told AFP .

The explosion took place in the Spin Ghar district, near the city of Jalalabad, one of the strongholds of the Afghan branch of the Islamic State jihadist organization, IS-K.

“There are currently three dead and 15 injured,” a doctor at the local hospital told AFP.

“I can confirm an explosion during Friday prayers inside a mosque in the Spin Ghar district. There are wounded and dead, ”a Taliban official also told AFP.

No claims have been made at this stage.

One of the latest ISIS attacks in early November on the Kabul National Military Hospital left at least 19 dead and 50 injured.

More than 120 people have been killed in IS attacks in recent weeks in two mosques frequented by the Hazara community, a Shiite minority.

Born in 2014, the IS-K, mainly present in eastern Afghanistan, has claimed responsibility for a wave of recent attacks in several major cities in the country, posing as the main rival of the Taliban since their return to power in mid-August. A Sunni Islamist group, like the Taliban, it is even more rigorous and advocates a “global jihad”.
