In the town of Moirax, in Lot-et-Garonne, an initiative allows young apprentices to be trained on site, thanks to a space renovated and rented at a low price. Marina and Lucas each occupy a studio for 90 euros per month. A project also implemented in 12 other municipalities in the department.
Nine years ago, a pretty house in the town of Moirax (Lot-et-Garonne) was a ruin. It was renovated to accommodate apprentices. Marina, 16, is an apprentice in the restaurant business, just like her roommate Lucas, who occupies the studio right next to hers. Everyone has their own private space, for a rent of only 90 euros per month. The house belonged to the municipality and was transferred free of charge to a social landlord who refurbished it.
More than 220 young people have benefited from this initiative
A project made possible thanks to funds from Europe, the State and the department of Lot-et-Garonne. The goal is to allow young apprentices to be able to stay close to their internship. “It would be unthinkable for my parents to go back and forth every day, because they also work”, explains Marina, who lives more than an hour away. Like 12 other municipalities in Lot-et-Garonne, the small village of Moirax allows young people to choose their internship not because it is near them, but because it suits them. More than 220 young people have been trained in this way in the department.
