A man who escaped from the Federal Training Center in Laval in 2019 was arrested by officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) on Monday. After four years of escape, this murderer is back behind bars.
Denis Bégin, now in his sixties, was arrested in Montreal as part of another investigation by the SPVM unrelated to his escape, said Julien Lévesque, public relations officer for the police force.
The SPVM cannot for the moment give more details in order not to harm the investigation still in progress, he adds.
“An investigation has been conducted by the Correctional Service of Canada into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the federal agency said in a statement Thursday.
Denis Bégin’s escape was publicized in 2019. He was serving a life sentence for second degree murder. He had also served two sentences for conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
He had been convicted in 1997 for the murder of Ricardo Gizzi, a drug dealer, in a Montreal brasserie. His story had made an impression because of his attire: he wore a hockey helmet on his face, like Jason’s character in the horror film series. Friday 13.
Denis Bégin had murdered Ricardo Gizzi with a bullet in the stomach in front of stunned customers, one Halloween night, in 1993.
