“A man in rupture”, without concession, a biography of Jean-Jacques Goldman about to be released… and it will make a lot of noise!

More than a star, a “hyperstar”! And even if his last album Songs for the feet dates from 2001 and his last scene dates back to 2002, Jean-Jacques Goldman has been at the top of the favorite personalities of the French for more than a decade! In addition, the artist offers himself the luxury of the greatest discretion by being absent from social networks and the media and his latest compositions, for the Trois cafés gourmands or Celine Dion, have been carried out in the greatest of secrecy. But this Friday, May 12, 2023, the publication program of Editions du Seuil announces the release of a book which is dedicated to this mysterious and reserved singer, under the simple title: Goldman. And surprise, scheduled for August 18, the book will be signed by historian Ivan Jablonka.

“His invisibility makes him strangely visible”

This 2016 Médicis Prize for his story of the murder of the young Laëtitia Perrais, looked at the case of the 71-year-old artist: “Jean-Jacques Goldman is not only a great name in song. He is also a child of Jewish immigrants who has become the favorite personality of the French, a committed artist after the death of utopias, a craftsman at the heart of cultural industries, a man breaking with virile codes”, indicates the presentation of the work.
A particularly interesting object of study for this author who, after a thesis on children in public assistance and a classic academic career, has become a successful author with books on subjective history and today co-directs a collection of essays, The Republic of Ideasto the same editions of Seuil.
The opportunity therefore for an in-depth analysis of the Goldman phenomenon, which preferred to withdraw “at the height of glory” specify the publisher and add: “In the madness of social media, his invisibility makes him eerily visible”. Between shadow and light, therefore, the atypical portrait of the one who has defined himself will take shape at the next literary season “Singer by obligation” failing, at the end of the 1970s, to place his compositions with the labels. In just seven solo albums, he ultimately sold more than 8.7 million copies!
