Real Madrid strikes again. Led 1-0 by Bayern Munich until the 88th minute, Carlo Ancelotti’s men turned this Champions League knockout match upside down by scoring two goals in three minutes (2-1) to win their semi-final return home, Wednesday May 8. Having managed to secure a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Bavaria, the Madrilenians join Borussia Dortmund, who defeated Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening at the Parc des Princes, in the final of the competition, which will be played on June 1 at Wembley (London).

The opener, however, was signed by a sublime, clear cross strike from left back Alphonso Davies into the small net opposite Andriy Lunin (0-1, 68th). Coming on in place of the injured Serge Gnabry in the 27th minute, the Canadian almost went from hero to zero when he put a strike from Fede Valverde back into his own cages, a goal ultimately canceled by the VAR for a foul. Nacho (71st). The Madrilenians ended up making the difference thanks to a providential entrant, Joselu, who first took a ball poorly released by Manuel Neuer after a strike from Vinicius (1-1, 88th), then cut a cross from Antonio Rüdiger at the far post to send Real Madrid to their 18th Champions League final (2-1, 90th+1).

Heroic Joselu despite an unsinkable Manuel Neuer

The 34-year-old Spanish striker, who is discovering the Champions League at 34, played the role of unexpected savior, coming on in the 81st minute replacing Fede Valverde. Already a scorer in the group stage, against Naples and Union Berlin, Joselu scored his first goals in the final phase of the competition with this double on Wednesday, in just twenty minutes spent on the pitch. The one who is on loan from Espanyol, a Barcelona club relegated to the second division last season, will therefore play his first final, two years after making the trip to Paris as a supporter, to support Real Madrid, his training club , against Liverpool at the Stade de France.

Before the Madrid number 14 came to turn the match around, the semi-final was the scene of an exceptional duel between Vinicius and Manuel Neuer. The Brazilian continued to provoke on his left side, multiplying attempts and full-axis percussion to split with Rodrygo or Jude Bellingham. But the German goalkeeper responded systematically, pulling off a miraculous save in front of Rodrygo after a strike on the post from Vinicius (13th), before slamming with the opposite hand a cross shot from number 7 Merengue (40th) then disgusting him after a crazy series of dribbles in the area (60th).

The other architect of the evening on the Munich side is Matthijs de Ligt, quick to tackle each overflow from the Brazilian will-o’-the-wisp (26th, 52nd). Performances unfortunately insufficient to allow the Bavarians to maintain their sealed lead against the run of play, caught up by an error from Kim Min-jae, who entered in the 76th minute and guilty of an alignment too late on the second goal, and the miss chances generated (only five shots, only one on target). The only mistake by Manuel Neuer, author of five saves, was paid dearly by Bayern.
