An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred Friday, February 25, north of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, announced the American Seismological Institute (USGS). The earthquake occurred at 8:35 a.m. at a depth of 12 kilometers and 70 kilometers from the city of Bukittingi, located in the province of West Sumatra, the USGS said. It was preceded by a slight earthquake of 0.5.

No tsunami warning has been issued, and no casualties or damage have been reported so far. But the quake was felt in the neighboring provinces of Riau and North Sumatra and as far away as Malaysia and Singapore.

Alim Bazar, head of the agency in charge of disaster management in Pasaman, near the epicenter of the quake, said the walls of some buildings cracked. “The mayor called and ordered that the second and third floors of each building be evacuated”did he declare.

Indonesia regularly experiences earthquakes due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates meet. The archipelago remains marked by the earthquake of December 26, 2004 with a magnitude of 9.1 off the coast of Sumatra, which caused a gigantic tsunami and caused the death of 220,000 people throughout the region.
