To facilitate the presence of parents during the first year after the birth of a child, the government wants to create birth leave in addition to maternity leave. Both fathers and mothers will be able to stay at home for three months. They will receive half of their salary, with a maximum of 1,900 euros per month. At a market in Bordeaux (Gironde), Sunday May 12, parents welcomed this device with enthusiasm.

Despite higher remuneration, the concerns of associations

“It’s a good thing, because it’s always too short, the time we have with the children before putting them into custody.“, estimates a woman. To take care of her daughter longer, a mother took five months of parental leave, paid a little over 400 euros per month. “I find that it’s very little, three months, already that maternity leave is very short. If it’s better paid, maybe that will allow more people to take it and enjoy the baby“, she supposes, mixed. The associations welcome this better remuneration but are concerned about the announced disappearance of parental leave, which could last until the child is three years old.
