In a small town in the Netherlands, residents have swapped their gas boiler for a hydrogen one. A painless transition that works and that could well serve as an example.

In the east of the Netherlands, Lochem is a pioneer town. It was one of the first in Europe to offer its inhabitants heating with hydrogen. “So far we’ve had no problems, especially with the hot water.“, explains Martin, who decided to get rid of his natural gas boiler to play guinea pigs. And for the installer, it did not require major work. The network manager is financing this experiment.

The energy of the future?

For now, only 12 homes are benefiting from this pilot project. So is hydrogen the energy of the future? The Netherlands believe in it. Here, on the outskirts of Rotterdam, an electrolyser, powered by wind energy, has been installed to heat a building. The advantage of this technology is that it does not produce Co2. The downside remains its price, but for this expert, hydrogen could become more affordable. “As long as we don’t get started, it won’t be cheaper”, says Albert van der Molen, innovation expert at Stedin Groep. In the Netherlands in any case, projects are multiplying.
