Nearly a hundred civilians, families with children and animals, march towards the buses of the army chartered by the Russes and leaves the hell of the fights this Sunday, May 1, 2022.
These civilians who were entrenched in the Azovstal factory, the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the besieged city of Mariupol, are the first to leave this area. They will be escorted by the UN and the Red Cross to an area held by Russian separatists to receive first aid and food aid. A long-awaited rescue and an unexpected outcome, made possible by tough negotiations between the UN and Russia, many times aborted.
According to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky these civilians will leave the camp the next day to join the area of Zaporijia, controlled by Ukraine and hosting refugees from Mariupol. “This is the first time that the corridor has started to operate,” said the Ukrainian head of state. The president’s teams will be there tomorrow upon arrival of Mariupol survivors. Several hundred wounded Ukrainian civilians and soldiers are still underground, under the threat of Russian bombing.
