An 18-year-old motorist, who hit a group of cyclists Thursday, September 29 north of Saintes (Charente-Maritime), was indicted for manslaughter, reports this Sunday, October 2 France Bleu La Rochelle. The accident caused one death and three minor injuries. The group, of about twenty cyclists licensed in several amateur clubs, had left for a hike.
A judicial investigation for “manslaughter and involuntary injuries” has been opened. The young man with no criminal record was placed under judicial control, with the obligation to surrender his driving license.
The driver claims to have lost control of his vehicle. It was the president of the club, “Le Braquet Saintongeais” who was fatally struck.
The accident took place early Thursday afternoon on the road to Port-d’Envaux. The next day the cyclists – who joined France Bleu La Rochelle – insisted on re-clarifying that they were pedaling in a row in pairs and not taking the entire lane of traffic. There was therefore room, according to them, to cross a car without danger.
The alcohol and narcotics screening tests carried out on the motorist are negative. The investigation must still determine if he was driving too fast on this section of road limited to 70 km / h.
