An 81-year-old man died after waiting 22 hours on a stretcher at the Strasbourg University Hospital on September 1, according to the Force Ouvrière union. He directly challenged the Minister of Health and denounced the repeated malfunctions of the emergency services.
It was a devastated family who arrived, on the morning of Wednesday, September 14, at the civil hospital in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). Their father and husband were taken care of here in the emergency room on August 30, in the early afternoon. He was discovered dead the following day, during the change of shifts, after 22 hours spent on a stretcher. If it is for the moment impossible to know the causes of death, the drama intervenes in a context where the unions denounce the deterioration of the care.
“36 hours before, we had made a statement to a right of alert to the general management to denounce the saturation of the emergency service”reports Christian Prud’homme, general secretary of FO-HUS (University Hospitals of Strasbourg). In March 2021, already, the death of a sexagenarian had led to the opening of an investigation. According to information from France Télévisions, the Minister of Health spoke in the morning with the management of the hospital, and the Regional Health Agency opened an internal investigation.
