To finance an innovative and expensive scanner, the Georges-Pompidou hospital launched a call for donations on Saturday December 30. A practice not so rare but which concerns some, believing that it is up to the State to fulfill this role rather than patronage, which could also create inequalities between establishments.

The call for donations published by the Parisian Georges-Pompidou hospital on Saturday December 30 was surprising. To finance a latest generation scanner, a large poster placed on its facade appeals to the generosity of the French, not all of whom are necessarily convinced. “It’s up to the State to pay, that is to say our taxes”, deplores a passerby. “I didn’t think we were there. I still thought, on this type of equipment, that it was budgeted, planned“, is surprised by another. This scanner notably allows better monitoring of cancers, and halves the irradiation dose.

The risk of inequality between hospitals

Some hospitals, such as in Lyon (Rhône), already have one. Its high cost justifies this call for donations, according to Philippe Juvin, head of the emergency department at Georges-Pompidou hospital. “The hospital, for this machine precisely, finances 80% of it, so we are only at the end of the financing. It’s a very, very innovative machine, which the hospital had planned to buy within two or three years.”and that the call for patronage will make it possible to have more quickly, he assures.

A practice not so rare, but which should not finance everything, warns Thierry Amouroux, spokesperson for the National Union of Nursing Professionals (SNPI). It could also create inequality between hospitals.
