Be careful on the road: rain and ice this weekend in Quebec

Be careful of the ice on Saturday morning: up to 2 mm of ice is expected in certain regions of Quebec.

The mild weather that has been felt in Quebec for some time now will persist this weekend, bringing conditions that could be difficult on the road.

A freezing rain warning has been issued by Environment Canada in Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie and Saguenay.

“Exercise caution when walking or driving in affected areas. Adapt your driving to changing road conditions,” warned the federal agency.

For the rest of the province, even if no icy weather is forecast, Environment Canada still calls for caution on the roads.

“Be prepared for changing road conditions. The mild weather will cause the formation of fog banks that could suddenly reduce visibility and melting snow, posing a risk of aquaplaning on secondary roads,” the government agency said.

In the south and center of Quebec, Saturday is expected to be generally cloudy and will be accompanied by temperatures oscillating between 5°C and 8°C. There is no precipitation in sight in the Montreal area, but a light patch of fog will be present in the morning after the rain that fell overnight. Similar conditions are expected in Outaouais, with the exception of a chance of showers late in the evening.

In Estrie, there is a risk of showers on Saturday, most likely in the form of rain due to the mild weather which is above seasonal norms.

In the Quebec region, intermittent rain is expected all day Saturday, which should turn into snow showers overnight.

In Abitibi-Témiscamingue, where temperatures this weekend are hovering around the freezing point despite the mild weather hitting the province, high probabilities of snow and rain showers are expected.

The trend will be towards cooling on Sunday, and temperatures should remain relatively mild compared to seasonal norms, throughout Quebec.

Here are the areas covered by the freezing rain warning, according to Environment Canada

– Kamouraska – Rivière-du-Loup – Trois-Pistoles

– Les Escoumins – Forestville

– Restigouche – Bonaventure
